Wider bars handle better?

Have 5,000 miles on my 2001 Savage purchased June 29. Mostly ride through the mountains in North Georgia. Anyway, after an embarrassing incident last weekend of missing a curve and running straight into a dirt embankment, I am going to need to replace the stock handlebars (buckhorn style). I have been very happy with the stock bars, find the riding position totally comfortable even during 180 mile day rides, and think the handling is very good, but don't have any other experience for comparison. I would replace the bars with the same, but the guys in my riding club (Southern Cruisers) are trying to convince me that wide bars would handle much better. What do you think? Has anyone tried both? Also, I am petite (5"2") with narrow shoulders and short arms.
